A Reflection On 2008
This time of year always brings a
moment of quiet reflection for accomplishments
and/or lack of in the previous 8784
hours of 2008 (a few extra hours were added
in for Leap Year—although the extra time did
not necessarily make me more productive).
Recalling all the excitement of a year worth
of hours gone by gets more challenging with
each passing, aging year, so allow me a
moment to walk in reverse beginning with
hour 8627.
With no warning, none of my secured,
closely guarded, secretly filed passwords
would work on my home computer. I tried
everything I knew short of calling my buddies
Bert and Ernie in a land far from the
Central Time Zone to activate my systems.
Conveniently, I only have the one password.
I am not as blond as I might appear but for
security purposes, I publicly maintain that
every system and program I have access to
has its own individual password. A true
enough statement as each program is
unaware they actually share the same password.
The problem with that system is when

one password does not
operate, none of the
‘different’ passwords operate.
In a feat even I am impressed with,
I finally diagnosed my own system failure.
Turns out the ‘e’ key on my keyboard no
longer works. Investigating that takes more
effort than one might think as when you type
in your secured, closely guarded, secretly
filed password, you never actually see any
letters/characters/symbols. You just see a
row of **************. In a life where so
much is taken for granted, you never appreciate
vowels until you have to live without one.
For example:
In a fat vn I am imprssd with, I finally
dianosd my own systm failur. Turns out th “
” ky on my keyboard no longr works.
Invstigating that taks mor ffort than on might
think as whn you typ in your scurd, closely
guardd, scrtly fild password, you nvr actually
s any lttr//charactrs/symbols. You just s a row
of ************. In a lif whr so much is
takn for grantd, you nvr apprciat vowls until
you hav to liv without on. And that was my

excitement for the month of December or
Dcmbr.
The fall hours of 6480-7980 were
spent beginning my 18th year in public education.
Not all 18 years were worked consecutively
as the job attention disorder had
me experimenting in previous years with previous
careers of Federal Follies and Arresting
Fools, Real and Fake Estate Sales,
Consulting for Cash and other job of
unknown pay origins. For IRS purposes, all
income, real and otherwise, was reported
diligently by my trusty accountant Anita
Cash.
The reflection here was how close to
actual retirement is my reality. If I had stayed
with the Federal Follies, I would be entering
the sunset of my retirement at the end of ’09.
More realistically I would be serving time in
Istanbul for impersonating a U.S. Citizen
while working under cover in busting counterfeit
Dooney & Burke purses. The other
careers would have had me vested heavily in
self-employment hedge funds and retirement
would easily be three or four decades away.
In my trusty public education fund, I can easily
retire in the next 20 years or more depending
on my future consecutive working years
and/or if I am not convicted of accidentally
sending a not so innocent seventh grader to
an early demise . . .
The summer hours of ’08 were spent
on the road, but not with Charles Kuralt of
CBS News. Of course he long ago travel his
highway to heaven and did not collect much
of his retirement as I recall—too many wives,
but that is another column idea. Maybe in
spirit he traveled with us, but in a tiny
Winnebego with a large dog, there was not

much room for even random spirits. I take
that back, we had plenty of room for liquid
spirits (if you know what I drink). Details of
those reflective moments rolling through
Yellowstone National Park and other states
only accessible in the summer months can be
archive from the column of August ’08.
The ’08 hours of 48 through 2407
were an experience in ultimate patience.
January through May taught me a lesson
about why every child does not need an education
beyond the seventh grade. Some children
were born to lay asphalt, nail roof shingles
or wave neon orange traffic flags on road
construction sites. Some children are brilliant
enough to study brain surgery but not
smart enough to say no to driving the get-away
car in a botched bank robbery. Some
children cannot find their way to the lunch
room without instigating a fight, but will lead
their respective gang with pride in prison.
Some of these darlings will be the clerk issuing
my driver’s license in four years and that
will explain the long wait in the long line.
Upon further review, the hours of
blessings in 2008 far out-weighed the hours
of aging gracefully as I anticipate the arrival
of my AARP welcome packet. I enter my
fifth decade near the end of 2009. One-half
century of living is cause enough to spend a
bit of time reflecting as my bits of time are
coming at me faster and faster. Bet you did
not think you had spent so many minutes of
your lifetime reading bits of my lifetime.
Take some time and reflect on that—or find a
great cable television show to tell me about. .
