September 6-11 marked the
dates when the Texas Association of
REALTORS® annual state convention
took place here in San Antonio. A
number of events transpired during
the six-day convention including governmental
affairs meetings, education
seminars and the installation of
Brooke Hunt as the 2009 Texas
Association of REALTORS®
President, Bill Jones as the TAR Vice
Chairman, and our very own Dwight
Hale as the 2009 TAR Secretary &
Treasurer. Karl Rove was the opening
Key Note speaker and kicked off the
educational portion of the convention.
He gave a humorous and informative
presentation discussing the upcoming
election and gave insight to interesting
facts on which the media has not
focused its attention.
“This is the longest Presidential
election term in history,” Karl Rove
began. He explained that December
6th, 2006 was the day when the first

candidate for the 2008 Presidency
entered the election race; that was 23
months before the actual election to
be held in November of 2008.
Mr. Rove explained that there is
a lot of history surrounding this election
which sets it apart from others in
America’s past. There either will be
the first African-American President
of the United States or the first female
Vice-President. For this reason, it
may be the first time in history that
the Vice-Presidential candidate makes
a difference in the race for President.
Mr. Rove explained that in the past,
the VP candidate typically affected
the votes from the state where he was
from, by possibly plus or minus 1%.
In this case, it is different because
there is inevitable history being made
on either side of the ticket. In addition
to this, Mr. Rove also said polls
are showing the largest number of
undecided voters since 1968 when

ran against each other. The votes
seem to be volatile, as they are changing
all of the time between the two
candidates.
Mr. Rove felt strongly that both
candidates chose running mates who
helped them politically. He said they
were picked not necessarily because
they would be the best fits for the job,
but because they would help offset
some of the criticisms both candidates
were facing. Mr. Rove explained that
Obama’s choice, Senator Joe Biden,
has experience with foreign policy,
which the democratic party hopes will
offset the criticism toward Obama for
being inexperienced in that area; and
John McCain chose Sarah Palin with
hopes that she may help win over
Republican women voters and some
of the Democratic and Independent
voters who were in favor of Hilary
Clinton.
In a large part of his speech, Mr.
Rove talked about the differences
between the Republicans and the
Democrats and how both sides are
handling the election this time
around. He said that the Republicans
are concentrating on promoting
McCain’s experience and maverick
record and that the Democrats are
promoting change and the “we care
about you” philosophy. He said that
McCain’s big ticket items are energy,
taxes and spending and that there
should be a limit on how many tax
dollars the government can take from
citizens. The Democrats, on the other
hand, are concentrating on the economy,
jobs and healthcare. They are
also proposing a plan to raise taxes
for the top 5% of the country and to
give a $500 credit to the middle and
lower class families. Those who do
not pay taxes will receive a $500
check in the mail as a gift from the
government.
Mr. Rove concluded his speech
with the fact that our country is facing
a lot of challenges right now and that
whoever is elected president will have
a lot to deal with in the coming years.
When asked what his prediction was
on the outcome of the election, he
said “It’s really too early to tell right
now, but history shows that a
Democrat should take office with two
consecutive terms of a Republican
preceding the upcoming Presidency.”
He went on to say,”But this election is
different because of many factors and
it may be that McCain wins by a small
margin. We’ll just have to wait and
see.”
