Natural Gas Makes Your Home Energy Efficient
Choosing natural gas for your
home is one of the best ways you
can save energy and money. In fact,
the U.S. Department of Energy says
when used in combination with
electricity, natural gas requires 20
to 30 percent less total energy production
than comparable all-electric
homes. With natural gas, you can
conserve energy without compromising
comfort and convenience.
Today, you can join more than 61
million U.S. households that rely on
natural gas for heating, water-heating,
cooking, clothes drying and
other uses.
Did you know that natural gas
is the best choice for all home heating
applications and is the most
efficient energy source for heatgenerating
appliances? It’s true. In
fact, a central furnace system that
operates on natural gas costs less
than an electric heat pump with
strip back-up in San Antonio.
Clearly, using electricity and natural
gas in a home is the smart energy

choice.
Using natural gas appliances
in your home brings you more comfort
and convenience. Thanks to features
like instant on/off switches
and electronic pilot lights, natural
gas appliances are very easy to use.
As far as comfort is concerned, a
gas dryer is gentle on fabrics,
resulting in softer sheets and towels
and garments that keep their colors
bright for longer periods. Many new
dryers offer a moisture sensor that
automatically shuts off the machine
when the clothes are dry, saving
energy but also preventing wear and
tear on clothes caused by over-drying.
Plus, a natural gas dryer dries
up to three loads of laundry for the
cost of one load in an electric dryer.
What a bargain! For a limited time,
CPS Energy is offering additional
savings to customers with a $100
rebate on gas clothes dryers (see
cpsenergy.com for details).
And what about in the
kitchen? Well, most professionals

prefer to cook on a natural gas
range because of the consistent heat
output, precise temperature control
and easy cleaning. Also, a gas
range costs only about 25 percent as
much to operate. Finally, if the
electric power in your home is
interrupted, you can still cook on a
gas range.
If you have family members
with active lifestyles, choosing a
natural gas water heater is another
excellent way to save money. Gas
water heaters produce up to twice
as much hot water - per dollar - as
electric water heaters and heat twice
as fast. In addition, gas water
heaters have a longer service life
and lower maintenance costs than
comparable electric units. And,
while gas water heaters may cost
more initially, the energy savings
will continue during the lifetime of
the appliance. If you want to save
even more, CPS Energy offers a $50
rebate on gas water heaters – any
size, make, model, both tank and
tank-less. (Check cpsenergy.com for
details). Rebates are only available
to CPS Energy customers until Dec.
31, 2008.
Natural gas is not only good
for your pocketbook, but it’s also
good for the environment. In fact,
it’s the cleanest burning fossil fuel.
Homes that use natural gas for heat,
hot water, drying clothes and cooking
contribute up to 60 percent less
emissions into our atmosphere.
Using natural gas also helps reduce
tiny soot particles that can aggravate
asthma and other respiratory
conditions.
When natural gas is used,
lower levels of carbon emissions are
released into the atmosphere. Using
more natural gas is at the heart of
many climate-friendly energy policies.
When burned, natural gas
emits 45 percent less carbon dioxide
(CO2) than coal and 30 percent less
CO2 than oil on an energy-equivalent
basis. Composed primarily of
methane, the main products of the
combustion of natural gas are carbon
dioxide and water vapor, the
same compounds we exhale when
we breathe. In other words, using
natural gas is cleaner and greener
for your home and the environment.
Natural gas is also safe to use
in your home. A distinctive gaseous
odor is added to natural gas to make
it easier to detect. Most of the time
a person first learns about a gas leak
by smelling the rotten egg odor
called mercaptan. In case you or
anyone else smells a gas leak, leave
the area, notify police and fire officials
by calling 911, call CPS
Energy at 353-HELP and warn others
to stay out of the area.
CPS Energy has a history of
providing customers with the best in
natural gas services. In fact, J.D.
Power has rated CPS Energy as
highest in satisfaction for residential
natural gas customers in the
southern U.S. for three years in a
row. That’s a trend CPS Energy
plans to work hard to maintain for
years to come. For more information
