Time For A Tour Of Downtown!
By Cathey Meyer
Many in the real estate
industry have attended and benefited
from Downtown Alliance/San
Antonio (DTA), the popular Urban
Renaissance Luncheon Series. The
next Urban Renaissance Luncheon
will be held on November 10th at
the Pearl Stable and will feature the
“2008 State of Downtown.”
These luncheons have sold out
the last several occasions they have
been held, as the topics and speakers
have highlighted areas of current
interest for REALTORS and
others in the industry. This quarterly
luncheon series features presentations
from the most successful
downtown revitalization programs
in the country. Speakers have discussed
transit and transportation
impacts, living and working downtown,
transforming and reusing
downtown, attracting and entertaining
the "locals" downtown, and
other topics related to the urban
environment.

In the tradition of highlighting
downtown’s unique spaces,
Downtown Alliance/San Antonio
(DTA) will once again hold their
annual Urban Spaces Tour on
December 5th, 2008. The 2008
Urban Spaces Tour highlight’s one
of downtown’s ‘hottest’ areas…the
near east side. This is the fifth year
for the tour, which serves as a
fundraiser for the DTA. Past tours
have included different geographic
sectors of the downtown area and
showcased residential units, interesting
offices and unique spaces on
what has traditionally been a walking
tour with stops for food and
drink from some of downtown’s best
area establishments along the way.
For the first time this year, the
tour will be supplemented by shuttle
buses, as the featured spaces are
spread along the north/south edge of
the eastside of downtown and a bit
too far to walk between on a beautiful
December afternoon and
evening. The tour will start at one

of the more famous eastside watering
holes: Tucker’s Cozy Corner on
East Houston Street. From there,
tour groups will visit the Carver
Cultural Community Center to better
understand how this arts institution
is contributing to the east
side’s revitalization…and then on to
the historic Freidrich Building for a
stop at several unique office spaces.
The tour will continue on to
the booming Lavaca Neighborhood
on the southeast side of downtown
for a stop at architect Candid
Rogers’ special residences and then
to one of the Artisan Park
Townhomes in Victoria Commons.
The tour winds its way back to St.
Paul’s Square and a stop at the nearly
complete Vidorra high-rise
Condominiums for a peek of residential
life ‘above’ ground and a
look at unparalleled views of our
city. The closing reception will be
hosted across the street from the
Vidorra at The Spire, a historic
building with significant San
Antonio history.
Parking is free downtown for
this event at the Merchant’s Cold
Storage Building on Houston Street
and shuttles will take you back to
your car after the reception. Food
and beverage for the event will be
provided by Sunset Station, Alamo
Beer and Hippo’s Grocery and Deli.
Sponsors of the event include
Zachry Realty, the Carver Cultural
Center, Vidorra Living, The Mighty
Group and Lopez Salas Architects.
Tour groups are limited to
25 participants and will start every
half hour beginning at 2:30 PM
through 7:30 PM. Individual tickets
for the event are $ 70, with special
pricing for couples and a group
“six-pack” of friends or office
workers. Contact the DTA at
210.225.3862 for reservations and
more information about the tour.
Come preview what is happening on
the eastside of downtown and bring
that real estate spirit to the hottest
development east of the Alamo!
The Downtown Alliance began
as the Downtown Owners
Association (DTOA) and was established
in 1982 by a group of property
owners who recognized the need
for an organized group to protect
their interests in downtown San
Antonio. DTOA was a principle
partner with the City of San Antonio
and VIA in the TriParty Project
streetscape improvements and created
a public improvement district to
pay for the private property owners'
participation in the successful
effort.
In 1994, the membership
restructured the organization,
broadening their involvement and
the categories of membership to
become the Downtown Alliance.
Today, DTA is composed of major
property and business owners in the
downtown area, and others who also
are committed to downtown's revitalization.
With the ever increasing
interest in residential living and the
‘urban lifestyle’, the DTA now
coordinates the annual Urban
Spaces Tour to showcase areas of
downtown that many local residents
and business professionals might
not ordinarily visit.
