Imagine Homes, winner of the

Recently 28 high performance
homes have also been certified under the
U.S. Department of Energy’s newly
developed Builders Challenge program,
which sets a goal for introducing
220,000 high performance homes into
the market place by 2012. Homes that
qualify must meet a 70 or better on the
EnergySmart Home Scale (E-Scale)
meaning they are 30 percent more energy
efficient than homes built to the current
code.
Utilizing a “system” approach,
each home is engineered to provide maximum
performance, and enhance energy
efficiency. A few key materials used in
addressing issues of energy and water
usage in the homes are:
Diemilec spray foam insulation
applied as a liquid, expands within seconds
to 120 times its volume to fill every
space providing superior energy efficiency
and improving indoor air quality by
eliminating air movement through walls.
The product is a non-toxic spray foam
which reduces airborne dust making it
the healthy choice for those who suffer
from allergies, asthma or chemical sensitivity.
Return-air vents or transfer grills
in each bedroom that provide additional
paths for air flow, and fresh-air vents to
provide filtered fresh air to the home.
This avoids restricted air flows to closed
bedrooms and reduces potential for outside
air containing moisture, pollens,
pesticides or other pollutants to be pulled
in, as well as back-draft carbon monoxide
from gas-appliance flues, fireplaces
or garages.
Tank-less water heaters save energy
by providing hot water on demand
rather than working to maintain a tank of
hot water at all times.
