Commitment: The Road To Success
By Rick Barnes
Commitment is a mindset
Warren Buffet once said: If you are
thinking of your golf game when you are
shaving, your business will show it!
However, many people confuse this statement
as you showing an interest in something
and a commitment in something.
There is a big difference in interest and
commitment. When you’re interested in
something, you do it when it’s convenient.
When you’re committed to something, you
accept no excuses, only results.
Learning commitment from others
Here are a few examples of commitment
from others we can learn from.
General Billy Mitchell had to fight
the entire bureaucracy of the US Army and
the Navy. He was court-martialed in the
process before convincing Congress to create
the United States Air Force.
As a nurse, Margaret Sanger promoted
the idea of birth control. She had to
leave the country for fear of arrest. Her

relentless commitment eventually formed
Planned Parenthood Federation of
America.
Michelangelo spent years lying on
his back painting the Sistine Chapel. By
the time he completed the masterpiece, he
was virtually blind from the paint that had
splattered for years in his eyes.
What are you committed to?
What you commit yourself to be,
will change what you are, and make you
into an entirely different person. In other
words, not the past, but the future conditions
you, because what you commit yourself
to become, determines what you are—
more than anything that ever happened
yesterday or the day before.
Commitment is investing in you,
and you have to give it everything you
have!
Commitment and Excellence

than yourself

settle for excellence. Excellence is a way
of life. Hold yourself responsible for being
your very best. Never settle for good
enough!
Former Secretary of State Henry
Kissinger asked and aide to prepare a
report. After working day and night the
aide submitted the report. Shortly after
receiving the report, Mr. Kissinger
returned it with a note that said “Redo this
report”. The aide diligently went back to
work on the report and turned it back in to
Mr. Kissinger and again was told to redo it.
After the third time it was returned
to the aide, he requested to speak to Mr.
Kissinger. “I have completed this report
three times, and this is the best that I can
do.” Kissinger replied, “In that case, I’ll
read it now.”

The margin of victory between an
Olympic gold medal and no medal at all is
extremely small. In the 2004 men’s 800
meter race, the margin of victory was .71
seconds.
At the Indy 500, the average margin
of victory for the past 10 years has been
1.54 seconds. On average, the winner took
home $1,278,813. The second place prize
averaged $621,321, a difference of
$657,492.
It’s time we turn up the heat…by
one degree!
To get what you’ve never had, you
must do what you’ve never done. The only
thing that stands between a person and
what they want in life is the will to try and
the faith to believe it is possible. Belief
fuels enthusiasm. And enthusiasm
explodes into passion.
Be willing to pay the price each
and every day
Practice scripts and dialogues every
day to master your skills. Remember, the
test of commitment is action. If we say “I
commit to being a great dancer,” and then
not practice, that’s not a commitment:
that’s just talk. Conversely, if we’re practicing
dance, we don’t need to tell ourselves
how committed we are. Our action
is our commitment.
Determine your distinct competitive
advantage to your
competition by being just a little
bit better than they are.
A married couple was backpacking
on a trail in the woods when one noticed a
grizzly bear was stalking them. The wife
sat down and calmly took off her hiking
boots and put on some running shoes.
“What good will that do?” her husband
asked. “You can’t out run a grizzly
bear!”
The wife said, “I know, all I have to
do is stay ahead of you!”
