Attitude Adjustment for 2009
I have always prided myself on
being happy all the time. While it may
drive some crazy (mostly my wife and
sister-in-law), it is a great feeling to hear
old friends or colleagues tell me how
much they miss my smile. It’s an attitude
that is highly overlooked these days
in our industry and to some extent it is
justified. Bobby McFerrin 1980’s song
'Don't Worry, Be Happy' is about real life
issues like homelessness, foreclosure
and diminished funds. We all agree happiness
is great but not everyone can be
happy all the time and certainly no one
can tell you not to worry and just be
happy.
You can Google this topic until
your blue in the face and find hundreds
of Top 10 Lists on happiness and attitude.
I’m just not that complex. What I
do is not that difficult so it is my pleasure
to have this opportunity to forward to
you anything I can for your personal or
professional success.
If you love your family and you
love your work, your half way home. No
one has to change who they are to be
happy, just your attitude. Our family,
friends, colleagues and clients expect it
so let’s give it to them. In a nutshell happiness
is all about attitude and here are
some suggestions for an attitude adjustment
for 2009.
Worrying about something will
only double the trouble. That’s what
Bobby says in his song and it is true.
Ask yourself is it really that bad? Look
around the world and even our own
country at what people are going
through. We are very fortunate to be living
in one of the most recession proof
cities in the United States. We got
through the 80’s and we will get through
2009. We have all been touched by the
ripple effect the economy has had on all
aspects of the Real Estate industry.
Maybe you have changed your job or
looking for a new one. If you are happy

ate more leads. Having a healthy attitude
means looking at these changes as an
opportunity not an uncertainty.
Turn problems or issues into
challenges. Openly frowning about
something will only bring everyone
around you down as well. This is a perfect
opportunity to find out who your
friends really are. Talking to them about
what’s got you down usually helps. If
not then turn it into a challenge. Be
mindful that our job is to solve our
clients problems not have them solve our
problems. Coworkers use to come into
my office and say we have a problem or
an issue on a particular file. Just saying
the word, problem, created a tense heart
racing environment and a sense of uncertainty
about the issue at hand. I kept
changing their words to “challenge”.
After a short while, they got it, and they
never brought me a file with a problem
again. Some are easy and some are challenging.
Minimize Bad News. I don’t
watch the news every morning and if I do
it’s to wait for the weather. I estimate
95% of what we hear is bad news or the
stupid stuff. Bad news includes calling
your financial advisor every 3 to 4 hours.
You already know what he is going to tell
you so why bother. Remember if you
have financial issues they are challenges
not a problems.
Be Nice. Support your staff,
coworkers, friends and clients. When I
leave the house in the morning my top
priority is keeping everyone around me
happy. One of the easiest ways to do this

is just being nice (weather you want to or
not). We all know that most clients are
great to work with. Some need a little
more TLC. No matter how hard you try,
it seems you will never be able to make
these people happy. By being nice, these
are the same people who will surprise
you with an apology or a referral. With
staff or coworkers it means smiling,
greeting and asking how they are doing.
After that, listen. Don’t text, email or
work on other things. Just listen.
Again, this is not rocket science.
If you truly want to be happy, you and
only you have the power to wake up each
day with the right attitude. I do it everyday.
