Summer Fun (in the sun?)!
By Tande Babb
The final bell of the school year is
about to ring and summer vacation is just
around the corner. For an entire summer
there is no more homework, no more
school work, and no more ‘school nights.’
While every kid is aching for season passes
to Splashtown, Sea World, Fiesta Texas
or Schlitterbahn, there are lots of other
activities in San Antonio that are fun and
not related to sun burns, wet swimming
suits, and a wash load of towels every
night.
San Antonio offers a diverse choice
of alternative summer activities. Open
daily and often overlooked are the Witte
Museum, Botanical Gardens and the San
Antonio Zoo and regular monthly events
like the Houston Street Fair & Market
sandwiched between the 37th annual
Texas Folklife Festival and the not to be
missed Ford Canoe Challenge on the
Riverwalk.
To begin the summer, UTSA’s
Institute of Texan Cultures is hosting the
37th annual Texas Folklife Festival in
HemisFair Park on June 13 – 15. This
P.O. Box 33862
San Antonio, Texas 78265
event showcases the authentic food, music,
dance and crafts from many of Texas’ different
ethnic groups. There will be 250
vendors, over 40 of them new to the festival.
Enjoy live music, hot and spicy foods,
and enjoy Texas’ rich heritage. You will
“leave with a new sense of friendship,
family and community.” For more information
call 210.458.2224 or go online to
www.TexasFolklifeFestival.org.
Have you seen the Witte Museum
recently? The permanent exhibits like the
full dinosaur skeletons, cave drawings, and
wildlife dioramas will amaze kids of all
ages. Currently, the Witte Museum, located
at 3801 Broadway, is featuring ‘The
Genius of Leonardo,’ this summer from
June 21 – September 7. The exhibit highlights
the mastermind machines built from
Leonardo Da Vinci’s original drawings.
Also, have you seen the H-E-B Science
Treehouse since its 2006 renovation? The
Treehouse is four stories of hands on fun
and learning for all ages. Go to
http://www.wittemuseum.org/index.html
for more information on summer offerings
and admission.

San Antonio’s Botanical Gardens,
on the corner of Funston and North New
Braunfels, in addition to daily hours of
operation, will be hosting summer camps.
Junior Gardeners, ages 6-8 or 9-12, will
learn to plant from seed, take cuttings, and
design their own garden. Junior
Naturalists, also ages 6-8 or 9-12, will
explore nature as they learn outdoor skills
such as plant identifications, birding, fishing,
hiking and ethnobotany. For 5-6 year
olds there is Budding Gardeners, a halfday
session on Tuesdays and Thursdays
that allows young ones to explore gardening
and nature with hand-on investigations
and creative play. Special events at the
Botanical Gardens this summer include:
Concert Under the Stars: June 19th, July
17th and August 21st; Dog Days of
Summer: August 2-3; and the theme for
July is Art in the Garden. For more info
visit: http://www.sabot.org/?nd=home
San Antonio Zoo, located in
Brackenridge Park, is open all summer.
The zoo offers hands on interactions with
animals in the Lory Landing and
Butterflies! Exhibits. Inside Lory Landing
visitors can get up close and personal with
lories, a bright colored Australian bird, by
feeding them nectar. In Butterflies! there
are hundreds of butterflies everywhere. If
you are patient, the butterflies are sure to
land on you. Aside from numerous
exhibits that can be shared as a family, the
zoo also offers zoo summer camp adventures.
From children entering kindergarten
to those entering 8th grade, there is a camp
experience for all of them. And, if there is
a tiny one at home, the zoo offers the Tiny
Tot Nature Camp for ages 2-4 accompanied
with a parent. For more information
about the zoo’s exhibits or about the summer
camps, go to http://www.sazoo-
aq.org/.
The Houston Street Fair & Market
takes place on the last Saturday over every
month from Noon to 6 p.m. This event is
free, including parking, and features handmade
arts and crafts and an activity area
for children. If you are looking to add
another addition to your family as a playmate
for your child, there is also ‘pets in
the park’ pet adoption area. This summers
themed events are – C4 Ultimate Bull
Blowout on June 28, Summer in SA on
June 26, and Car Show on August 30.

on the San Antonio river. The FORD
Canoe Challenge will begin at the
Chamber of Commerce, heading east
through and around the Convention Center
Lagoon, through the River Center Mall
Lagoon and finishing up back at the
Chamber of Commerce. An event like this
can’t be missed or if you’re feeling competitive…join
in the fun. Call for more

Summer vacation is a fun time for
kids, and San Antonio offers events and
attractions for the whole family. Get the
kids out of the pool and take a trip out to
one of the alternative summer activities.
It’s a great time to bond, and it might just
save you a load of laundry.
