Concept Homes
CPS Energy, in partnership with
Woodside Homes of South Texas, broke
ground recently on the Peak Performance
Concept Homes project, the first program in
Greater San Antonio designed to test and
measure the benefits of highly energy-efficient
building materials and practices in
home construction.
Woodside will build three test homes
in the Avalon Subdivision off Old Prue Road
near Bandera Road, and CPS Energy will
seek to demonstrate to homebuilders and
home buyers how high-efficiency building
elements and integrated solar energy components
can be incorporated into new homes
across broad price ranges without sacrificing
comfort or aesthetics.

CPS Energy and Woodside Homes Unveil Peak Performance
The concept homes will be sold to
individual homeowners at prices within the
same range – starting at $180,000 – as the
rest of the homes in the Avalon Subdivision.
The utility is investing almost $30,000 in the
home with solar panels and about $20,000
in the other high-energy-efficiency home.
Since the 2,000-square-foot Peak
Performance Concept Home with solar panels
will be so well insulated, it will need only
a 2-ton air conditioning unit instead of an
3.5-ton unit and realize immediate energy
savings. Even on the hottest summer days,
the extra electricity needed for air conditioning
will be offset by solar-generated electricity,
thus eliminating more demand on
CPS Energy’s electrical system.
